A strange combination of character study (fairly interesting) and romance (rather disappointing). This, I suppose, is a good "contact zone" novel, exploring under the surface the interaction between New Zealand Maori culture and European influence. Maybe I missed the point, but I thought that some of the descriptions of Kerewin's psychology, while cleverly written and fairly transparently autobiographical, were a bit forced and selfconscious.
