This novel presents a vision of a world in which a cult religious group has gained total control and women are confined to old stereotypical female roles, allowed no property or education.
The narrator of the story can remember how things use to be with women wearing make-up, going to work, reading etc., all of those simple freedoms that we all take for granted.
This book also addresses the danger of slowly giving away our freedoms for more security.
