At the risk of sounding cliched, this is fiction that reads like a fabulous memoir. Jeannette Walls had quite a grandmother, and this story made me appreciate the tenacity and courage of many people who braved war, discrimination, the Depression, floods, droughts and ignorance in their quest to build their lives and settle this country. Cudos to Jeannette Walls and triple cudos to her remarkable grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. She was truly a woman before her time, independent, willful, and resourceful, and she is depicted as such--warts and all, with love and yes, with humor.
