The premise of the story intrigued me quite a bit. Unfortunately the novelty of the story gave way to some confusing, the-author-must-have-been-paid-by-the-word nonsense. I nearly put the book down at that point, but I remained curious enough to see what would happen to the characters. In the end Tan was able to reign in her story but at the price of having left an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
