By the end, I cried my eyes out. I wouldn't have enjoyed this book so much if I had read it by myself. The reading is absolutely perfect. Not only does Neil Gaiman have a really pleasant natural voice, he is really versatile with accents and changing his voice to fit the characters. And he alone probably knows what the different characters really should sound like. It is a simple reading just now and then (in dreams or over the telephone, for example) some technical "fun" is added to make it sound a bit different. And since it is used so rarely, it's of great effect when it is used. And so it is up to Mr. Gaiman himself to make us feel for the characters and he simply does it. For example, at the end the desperation of the protagonist is so audible in Gaiman's reading that it made me cry as much as I haven't in quite some time.

Now the story itself. I really enjoyed this trip through London Below with all it's strange, magical characters and places and I loved how Gaiman re-interpreted such well-known things like Earl's Court or Blackfriars. The characters are all most interesting and if not likable, they are at least fun und scary. Richard Mayhew, the protagonist, is just a sweet guy, but I really can't decide which I like best; him or one of the other members of the group: Door, Hunter or the Marquis de Carabas.

I loved the Floating Market and Old Bailey and Anasthesia but just one thing kind of irked me (and I don't know if I had realised it that intensively when I had read the book for myself): the repeating of eye colours. I really had understood after the second time, that Door had opal eyes and Lamia's were foxglove-coloured. I didn't need to hear it mentioned almost every time their eyes came into focus. But this is really the only thing I can complain about.

I really recommend everyone to listen to the audiobook at least once.

message 1: by pax (new) - rated it 5 stars

pax I've read the book first and then listened to the audio: and while the book was nice and enjoyable (well, it's Gaiman!), it did not deserve all five stars. But oh, the audiobook did!

Noria I'm doing it the other way round and while reading the book I sometimes still hear Mr. Gaiman's voice in my head.

I'm on a Gaiman trip right now after watching the Doctor Who episode he wrote.
