I expected to like this YA novel very much, as I greatly enjoy Brennan's writing online - she's extremely funny. And I did like The Demon's Lexicon, but I didn't fall head over heels for Brennan's world.

Nick and Alan are brothers who are constantly beset by attacks from magicians. Magicians, in this world, get their power from entrapping demons. Nick and Alan have a difficult relationship - Alan protective of Nick, Nick not really understanding Alan - and when Alan insists on helping two siblings protect themselves against the magicians, to the extent of endangering himself to help them, Nick is frustrated and angry.

The story moves fast, the world of the magicians and the Goblin's Market coming to life. There were elements I didn't like - Jamie's one-liners are a bit out of place, at times. I have only ever met this type of character who makes jokes in whatever situation they're in in books and movies, and I have a feeling I would find them incredibly irritating in real life. So that kind of grated on me. I liked the - well, it's not really a twist, but the additional information that's revealed towards the end, and it's well done. But I think it's hard to make such a character likeable and sympathetic, and I don't know that Brennan succeeds.

Enjoyable overall and some great aspects - the blurb of the sequel sounds a bit too much like more of the same, but I'll probably pick it up anyway when it comes out.
