I love Alice Hoffman for her magical realism. This book didn't have much magical realism (except for the last 1/3 in connection to Claire), but it had escapism through a made up magical world by one of the three sisters. I LOVED this book. It is honest and fresh and real and heartwarming. That is a lot to say considering the story revolves around three sisters, one of whom is molested/raped and then spirals into drugs, sex, you name it which destroys the entire family. This story has been told many times before, but Hoffman's tale is engrossing and beautiful. I think TEEN GIRLS WILL LOVE THIS! It's not titillating or cliched - just pure beauty in its raw emotions and actions. The book is full of sorrow and grief but also love, hope, and redemption.
