Belong to Me could be assigned the unfortunate epithet "chic lit" in that it is primarily about women and will likely appeal more to women than to men. But the characters here have little in common with the vapid, self-absorbed shopaholics who populate the books that more snugly fit the chic lit category. For one thing, they're all improbably smart--the author is not afraid to let them use big words or discuss big ideas or employ complex metaphors or pause to enjoy a particular word (how it sounds, the effect it has). (She has a PhD in literature and creative writing, and it shows.) Each character has a unique and distinguishable voice or perspective, and all of them are the sort of people we'd love to have in our own lives. More importantly, their stories are compelling. So I can recommend this one--it's a pretty light, quick read, yet thoughtful and absorbing.
