It took me months to get through this book, and I am usually a very fast reader. It is not that I minded the non-ending, the convoluted plot, the confusing characters, or the long sentences, or even the footnotes -- per se. I just really felt that taken all together, the book did not add up to a pleasurable read. It is interesting, yes, but so very laboring; I had to work at keeping up my interest. An Italian friend told me that the book lost a lot in translation (not surprising, most books do), but I am doubtful that reading Gadda's masterful use of regional dialects and accents could have saved the book for me. I am glad I stayed with it, probably even glad that I read it, there are some wonderful descriptive passages and internal monologues. But again, it is not enough to make me want to read another one of Gadda's works.
