It's been a while since I read a book about preaching. Probably the last one would have been "Preaching Re-imagined" by Pagitt. I'm sure these two books would have something in common, but very little. While Pagitt's take on preaching is that it should be done communally - to hastily summarize a book in a sentence - this book essentially advocates for the traditional form of monologue preaching "re-imagined" if you will.

Much of the book won't surprise or challenge someone who has taken a few homiletics courses, but it does offer a few different ideas:
1. Preaching should be done in the street on a regular basis. (ie. have services in public not private venues, including street corners and parks)
2. You shouldn't over-think or over-prepare for a message (he preps 6-10 hours/week) but rather just preach from the heart after you've given time to let the passage work in you. In his words you should be, "opening a vein and bleeding for God."
3. Don't depend on illustrations to make points, just preach the text and let it make points.

All in all I think it's a good reminder for preachers not to let themselves get so wrapped up in their own self-importance when they preach but rather to depend on the Spirit to do the work. He doesn't say that any of his thoughts or methods should be intended as the blueprint for everyone, but obviously it works for him. Okay, but not great book.
