This was my first experience with H.G. Wells, and I wasn't disappointed.
In the book's introduction, Wagar describes the book as violent and terrifying; after a few chapters of Wells' engaging but pleasant prose, I couldn't imagine being truly scared of this story. I was proven wrong by the book's final third -- there is a slow build that leads to a frenzied ending that left me sad, repulsed, and a little freaked out. While the science-fiction aspect of the book certainly provokes some horror, it's Wells' take on the dark side of human nature that left me chilled. Griffin's letter describing his intent to kill Kemp was one of the more disturbing things I've read. Cudahy Main Stacks: PR5774 .I5 2002.
