Masie Dobbs is walking to a meeting with a client when she is caught in an explosion as a beggar commits suicide with a hand grenade. Shortly there after she is contacted by Scotland Yard (Special Branch) with a request for assistance with a threatening letter (which includes her name in the message). She agrees to work with them and is soon embroiled with shellshocked WWI veterans, poison gasses and conflicts between the Special Branch and Military Intelligence as she puts her special talents to the test along with the help of her employee Billie. A nice quick read of a period mystery.
