I can honestly say that I don't think I would have picked up this book if it hadn't been picked for book club. I've never read anything like it, which isn't a bad thing. I was struck by the language (think a rougher version of "In the Heights"), and by the alternating anger and sorrow that Diaz writes with. I don't quite know how I feel about the book. I certainly don't think it was a waste of time, and I found the latter half of the book much stronger than the first part. And it still haunts me, which is a good thing.
