What I learned: That Warren Zevon was a very troubled but astonishing gifted artist. (Okay, I already knew that.) This is a fascinating and intimate account of the life of a brilliant songwriter whose talent was unfortunately tempered with a host of problems - drinking, drugs, obsessive compulsive disorder and finally, cancer. The author was married to Zevon at the beginning of his career and remained a loyal friend for most of his later years, so she knows her subject well and doesn't shy away from even embarrassingly revealing matters. There's not as much about Zevon's actual songs here as I would have liked, so I'd recommend listening to his his albums as you read...
