I wish I had read the book before seeing the movie several years ago. I kept seeing Sidda as Sandra Bullock! Not that that is bad, I just was influenced by the movie and not as much by the author's description of certain things. Definitely a book about the love-hate relationship between mothers and daughters which I can totally relate to with my own "Vivi" (although my mother was definitely much gentler then Vivi and thank goodness not an alcoholic). This book made me appreciate my own crazy family and all of our "secrets."
