I forced myself to finish this one. I hadn't read any fantasy in a long time, and I like the genre for the same reason I like travel writing - I like reading about different cultures and imagining what it would be like to live by a different set of rules. I enjoyed this up to the major turning point, about halfway through. Initially, it was about a young woman who had traveled to a foreign country to translate an ancient religious document. In this world, the greatest crime was to change one's name (and thus, status), which this woman, born a slave, had done. All of that was really interesting. And I liked that same sex relationships were treated in the same way as opposite sex relationships. But then halfway through, as far as I'm concerned, it jumped the shark.
