it was amazing
Read in January, 2007

This was the first of David Lodge's books I read and it's still one of my favorites. It brought back things I'd forgotten about the 1960s: birth control, particularly. The main character has three children under 4 and he and his wife are terrified she may be pregnant again. The rhythm method (remember that?) isn't working.

The literary references are delightful. There are some really hilarious scenes in this book.

Not beling Catholic or English myself, I've found the lives of his English Catholic characters intresting in all his books where they appear.
