Having missed this one in my high school curriculum, I decided to give it a shot now, especially as my copy has been lying about for years. If I were a high school teacher, I would not inflict A Separate Peace on a typical high school class: I suspect they would find it too dated, the writing too "wholesome," and perhaps the setting and characters (rich white New England boarding school boys) too unrelatable. Still, it is a good time capsule and a clean, well-written, even haunting coming of age tale. At the very least, it makes you realize, hmm, these are the types of guys who, through most of U.S. history, have grown up to run the country.
