I hesitated on the rating. So hard for me to decide. On the one hand, I really liked the book, the descriptive writing style, the vivid colors throughout the book, the palpable characters whom you can't help but love and admire, the themes of love and forgiveness and courage, and the tragic realities of war in Germany. I wanted to give a 5 for these reasons alone. On the other hand, sometimes the narrator bugged me and I didn't really appreciate the obvious foreshadowing that made it less of a foreshadow and more of a 'spoiler'. That aspect seemed juvenile to me, in an otherwise very enjoyable read (but not always was it annoying, just enough to mention). I'm a stickler about 5s and need to uphold my standard that I only give them for books I would read again and I might read this one again. In the end I'd give it a 4.5, which happens to round up to a 5, so there you have it.
