A common theme I hit a while back was the erosion of expectation. The general idea is that you experience a book or film or something that isn't very good, but ok. Enjoyable enough. You accept that as a decent standard, and move on to the next. You keep doing this until you can happily read or watch utter drek without knowing any better.

I see that a lot. It's why I no longer own a TV.

I've had this issue with books. If I know a book is dreadful I'll just stop reading it. I have an *awful lot* of books I stopped reading.

Snow Crash is somewhat different. It's so well written, so fresh and exciting and makes so much sense that I now going to find it very difficult to find books that satisfy this much. Next on my hitlist is probably Against A Dark Background [which I have tried and failed to read three times], because I trust Iain M. Banks to deliver - eventually. The next book I buy will be Cryptonomicon.
