Jane Smiley writes in the voice of a young mid-western girl at the time of the abolition debate, pre-Civil War. She moves with her husband of a few days to Kansas Territory where all kinds of wild west woes happen to and around her. The story is hugely interesting to fans of US history and the writing is so wonderful I was delighted with her skills. If you've read 1000 Acres, her Pulitzer winner, you'll be surprised at this one, the approach it totally different. Ms. Smiley has a lot of tricks up her sleeve and I'm going to read more of her books to see just what they are.
