I don't have an ingrained dislike of ghost stories, and I'm open to the possibility that good ones for children exist. Mary Downing Hahn's latest attemp falls short of such a distinction. The plot is predicatble and at the same time, not nearly fleshed out enough. Events occur rapidly, without enough build up to create any actual feeling of fear, and wrap up way too neatly. The narrator is not believable as a thirteen year old boy, and Corey, who could have been a strong and interesting character, never gets fleshed out. Perhaps if I hadn't resorted to skimming the last few chapters, I would have felt something more than annoyance at the final "exorcism" scene, but I just couldn't muster up the energy to savor this fluffy, albeit neatly written novel.
