A typical Thubron book. As usual he gives us elegant, well-composed, occasionally exciting prose. But also, as usual, a sad book. Thubron's writing is eloquent, (if occasionally a bit purple) his research and historical context is excellent...and he tends to find and interview the most downtrodden, indigent, and laid-low people he can find. You get a good picture of how badly people have abused one another, and how wars and dictators have taken their toll. You never come away from a Thubron book feeling excited about mankind's prospects, or about travelling to the region in question.
