Learning this wasn't historical fiction--it was just fiction--took something away from the book for me. Not only that, but the author brackets his story in a faux historian's prelude and epilogue that I found almost sneaky. It was an exciting tale, but only if it were based on true events.
Just the same, it was interesting enough that I'll try to find the Michael Caine movie on TiVo or elsewhere. Also, the voice actor who read the audiobook did a great job with various accents (English, Irish, American...) that brought the characters to life.
