A reread. Pleasant and witty, but I never quite felt sufficiently invested in the characters. I did like the casual acceptance of homosexuality and the acknowledgment of different kinds of romantic and pseudo-romantic relationships.

Helenkrump I am one of those people who frequentlyread the biography of an author before reading their oeuvre, so this is the first book I've read of Pym's although I am periodically obsessed by the details of her life. At any rate, I agree completely with your opinion of this novel (although I only felt moved to give it 2 stars); the modern, and matter of fact treament of homosexuality was refreshing, but the characters weren't likable or interesting otherwise alas; I am going to read Excellent Women next, and hope to be more impressed by it...

I hope you enjoy Excellent Women. I read it many years ago, probably as a teen, but from what I recall it surpassed The Sweet Dove Died.
