It is a true shame that Machado de Assis is not wider read in America, especially considering how clear are the lines of comparison between him and Kurt Vonnegut, one of the few real titans of American literature. I had read this book once before under a different title, but definitely appreciated it more this second time. There are many subtleties and complexities which I think I won't even pick up on after a third or fourth reading. If you have any interest at all, you should seek him out.
