I really hate books where people forget that they write what they know. For instance, this author for some reason doesn't know anything about Islam or Africa, so he writes off an entire continent and an entire religion in two paragraphs and completely removes them from the story. An end of times story with no Africa. Or any black people. Yellow ones get mentioned in passing as well, and America is only the birthplace of the Anti-Christ and then a whiny bitch of a nation in later sections. Everything takes place in England and Rome, with infrequent mentions of Europe. Germany gets to contribute ritual and France is of course hysterical. That's the entire world, according to Benson. Never mind all the missionary work that was being done in Africa and Japan in the time when he was writing, he didn't think it would ever amount to anything so he just wrote it off. I think the book would make an excellent science fiction thriller movie, with a few updates. I feel sympathy for Father Franklin, I find Oliver Brand abominable as I'm supposed to, but I can't help thinking the entire world view isn't so much color-blind as just unable to see any color that isn't White. I keep expecting race purists to grab the book out of my hands for reading above my station. By the way, I'm a Black Catholic, or at least I was until I became an overeducated atheist. I still like the ritual though. And I can see why Joseph Ratzinger likes this book so much.
The ending was silly. I still think this would make a good sci fi movie with a bit of rewriting and maybe some decent character development. It's good research for the postapocolyptic story brewing in my head. I kind of like Benson's insane religious hysteria, though I do not envy his narrow and pathetic worldview.
