It's probably a better study of class composition of the rebellious slaves than it is a biography of Spartacus, himself. A lot of conjecture, but I suppose that is inevitable with the lack of archaeological data to choose between differing historical accounts. The final chapter of the book would have been greatly improved if the author could have written something about the changes in Roman slavery--in addition to describing the fates of the most prominent Romans involved in the war.
