I'll start by saying that I don't think I'm the right demographic for this book to begin with. My husband recommended it because I like urban fantasy novels with strong women leads, and this book certainly delivers that. There's a really strong sci-fi/fantasy geek bent that is just not my cup of tea, and I bet that if it were, I would probably enjoy a lot of the geek references. Also, the inclusion of anything vaguely steampunk gives me reading hives.

Where this book failed again and again was bludgeoning the reader over the head with exposition, diversions into pseudo-philosophical musings that are dismissed almost immediately by the main character (so why bother with the Matrixy rip off and paragraphs of exposition in the first place?), and a general lack of cohesion between action and the author's inner monologues. Overall, the book just didn't gel. There are bits of interesting stuff, but even that stuff seems thrown in because the author really wanted to get his own thoughts out on paper. Which is fine if it's done subtely, but there is nothing subtle going on in this novel.

That said, I have read worse, and I'm intrigued enough to check out the next book in the series- I've been assured it's miles better writing-style-wise.
