Abandoned by a drug-addicted mother and curiously attracted to a boy who (righteously and accidentally) killed his father but should be part of the enemy in a long-funning battle between the school students, the townies, and the visiting Cadets, Taylor connects the dots of a long-ago fatal accident which brought her parents together and a second that tore them apart, a local character who took his own life before her eyes, a younger student at the school and the woman, a sort of housemother, who has been both her support and her guide through her years in the school. This is quite magnificent story-telling, weaving the details of the 22-year-old story into the current on so cleverly that just when I've made some connection, so does Taylor. You care even about the minor characters. I can see why it was the Printz winner.
