recommended for: those interested in the paranormal
I'll be honest, I didn't quite finish this book. The library was calling it home, and I decided to return it. I may check it out later, but I finished most of it. With that disclaimer in mind, I will say I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Mary Roach delves into the space where science and faith often get into a fist fight: the afterlife. And it is a rollicking read.
With a surprising amount of humor, Roach is able to explore the various aspects of life after death - reincarnation, spiritualists, (note: Remember the big seance scene during the 1900s? My favorite chapter by far. One word, ectoplasm.), mediums, and the weight of the soul to name a few. It might not seem like a topic that lends itself to laughter, but I had a good belly laugh more than once. Plus, it lends to great dinner conversation - such as - did you know that mediums during the early 1900s covered themselves in sheep omentum in order to prove they had just been possessed during a seance?
