Once again John Flanagan manages to pick up from a cliffhanger only this time he does it very differently. This time he jumps a long span of time in the characters lives and continues from there. What he is doing is leaving room for another book or two that he can write there if he gets the asparations to write even more. After his training to become a ranger is complete, Will finally gets a castle of his own to supervise as Rangers do. But shortly after he takes over there is a problem. Skandian raiders come to raid Will's castle and the Battlemaster has his troops horribly unprepared. Since fending off the Skandians is not an option, Will must talk his way out of it with the Skandians. He successfully reaches an agreement with the Skandians got rid of a troublemaker at the same time. But that backfires on him when he is sent to another castle on a secret mission to deal with a "sorcery" case. He is disguised as an entertainer and he tries to loosen people up by entertainment to get them talking about whats happening. He finally discovers the real reason for the poisoning of the castles king and must travel into the forest to find the only person who might know how to cure him. However the troublemaker he sends to Skandia is back somehow and he threatens to reveal the tru identity of Will and his ally, Alice, the messenger for Will. When Alice's identity is revealed will must leave because the nephew of the king is trying to overthrow the King's son. It ends with Will vowing to return to save his Childhood friend Alice from the nephew
