Before I started to read this book I knew very little about Latin American politics. I knew names like Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Eva Perón but frankly the bulk of my knowledge came from Woody Allen's Bananas and old episodes of Mission Impossible. Frederick Boyle a.k.a. Ramon Bolio finds himself in a dangerous country. He arrives in Uruguay at a time when the country's dictator – and the dictators of a number of neighbouring countries – were hell bent on eliminating leftist political opponents in the region with the full support of the American government.

Frederick is young, naive and does a lot of growing up before he leaves the country after getting mixed up with the Tupamaros, an urban guerilla movement, and having to flee for his life.

This however is only have the story. All of that takes place in the seventies. In between we learn how Ramon becomes a tango teacher in York and what happens when his brother's daughter vanishes mysteriously.

Baker is best known as a crime novelist and although this is not a crime novel it does feel as if it was written by one. A highly readable book with an unexpected twist at the end.

You can read my full review of the book on my blog if you click on this link.
