At first, this book seemed like it would be a suspense/thriller -- setting up the reader to believe blackmail would be involved. However, it veered in another direction and instead became an exploration of identity and long hidden secrets. The middle part of the novel dragged a bit for me, but the language was rich and nuanced. I never bought the relationship between Vander and the girl. She seemed remote and unknowable and Vander's professed love for her seemed tacked on to an otherwise interesting story about Vander's past.
