This book is fiction, but the problem described in the book is VERY real. Thousands of Mexican people attempt to make their way to the promise of El Norte (America) each year.

Victor lost his father, leaves his mother and siblings to make it across the wire into the US and find work. He wants to send money home to his family.

Along the way, he meets Julio, who is attempting to return to America after working on a turkey farm; Miguel who is trying to get back into the USA so he can send money home to his family; and finally he runs into his friend Rico.

They get chased by border patrol and drug runners in their effort to live the American dream. Victor and Rico end up making very different choices.
