The very first thing I noticed is that physically this book is very readable. As I get older, some fonts and layouts are just too hard on my eyes; I've actually had to put books down recently because I couldn't take the design. I saw right away, with relief, that this book has a dark print, nicely spaced, on bright white pages. Also, the chosen serif font leads nicely into the conversational style of the book.

The book was very easy to get into. The main characters are quite relatable and felt real. There are serious troubles in this family and every member is trying to do their best to cope, not always gracefully. Generally, I think teens who like fantasy will enjoy this book, but there are some very serious themes that would cause me to recommend it primarily to older teens.
