Well researched and well told. The early history of the United States Navy is in this book. Giants of naval folklore: Preble, Barry, Decatur, Bainbridge, Lawrence and Hull are all discussed. Toll discusses the decision points in the early anti-navy, anti-tax Jefferson Administration and how Adams' early fight for these six crucial ships saved the nation 15 years later in the War of 1812. The War of 1812 is where the United States proved it could hold its own against a major European power.

Yet another book I add to my professional reading as a naval officer and I recommend to all of my colleagues.
