Alt-history steampunk set in a world much like ours at the start of WWI. Two parallel stories and characters that come together as the story unfolds - Deryn, a 15yo Brit girl disguised as a boy on board a living airship made out of whale (and other) dna and Aleks, the orphaned heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, on the run in an awesome 2-legged walker (like star wars imperial walker). Darwinists and Clankers working together...
Opens a new series (hallelujah!) that has much in common with the Airborn series by Oppel, but different enough to be thoroughly engrossing. Loved it.
