The Hunger Games is set far in the future, after North America's transformation into the nation of Panem. Surrounded by twelve districts, Panem's Capitol is cruel and takes advantage of its people's hunger and need. The ultimate example of this is the annual Hunger Games. Every year, each district chooses one girl and one boy to represent them in the Hunger Games. The object is to become the last survivor.

When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen sees that her younger sister has been chosen to represent District 12, she knows she has no choice but to volunteer to replace her. Katniss must use her survival skills and make fast life-or-death decisions in order to beat the other 23 contestants - including Peeta, the baker's son who saved her life years before...
