recommended for: anyone struggling with weight, others who want to understand what others go through
As an overweight woman who most of the time still feels good about her looks and her body, this book was an affirmation and was reassuring. The author looks at research projects that have gotten little press because these study go against the notion that overweight/obesity is a character flaw and always unhealthy. The author makes a good case that we have a weight range that we are going to remain unless we do drastic things like starve or force ourselves to eat more than feels right. Overweight people who were hospitalized and their diet controlled lost weight, down to weights that the "charts" said they should be. However, these folks showed clinical signs of starvation. Different bodies require different amounts of food.
The author also debates the notion that fat in itself is unhealthy. This is part of a new trend recognizing that cholestrol, triglyceride and blood pressure levels are better indicators of health. Overweight people who eat healthy foods and exercise can ...more
