okay. so this is the third time i've read this book in the last 10 or 12 years, and every time, it almost feels completely new. it's just so dense that it takes a long time to read and what you absorb one time really only makes up a fraction of what you remember. maybe after reading it 3 or 4 more times, i'll remember certain stories in full. who knows.
either way, it's a wonderful book, and a great selection of lovecraft's work. it's dripping and oozing with paranoia, revulsion, and horror, much like the nightmare creatures that inhabit it, and perfectly conveys the claustrophobia and weight of the vast reaches of space, time, and the sea.
in each of these stories is also plainly obvious the influence lovecraft has had over the last 70 years or so, whether it's an expected influence (like stephen king or tales from the crypt or even something like scary stories to tell in the dark) or a rather unexpected one (like futurama or buffy the vampire slayer).
