Few people have read this book, probably because it's about opera which so many find inaccessible. You're doing yourself a disservice, because this is a marvelous book and by no means limited to opera fans. It centers around a small struggling opera company in Austria as they start their new season, and the various problems they face. They have a star tenor who brings the audiences in but destroys his fellow singers with his nasty nature; they have a timid new soprano with a beautiful voice and a tragic past; they have an aging cynical conductor and an ebullient over-romantic director. The characters are lovable (and in some cases delightfully hateful), the storylines weave together seamlessly, and the music parts are so clearly written that even a novice will understand them.
