Writer-producer Larry Wilson told me that there are just two types of people working in Hollywood -- attackers and attractors. This book is about two unscrupulous attackers, Jon Peters and Peter Guber, who famously ran the Sony studios (into the ground, some would say). I found the book on the remainder shelf and of course it's dated, having been released in 1996. Many people might not agree, but showbiz culture has grown both more businesslike and more uncertain since then. Studio executives who were prone to throwing things or even punching out people now go to anger-management classes and at least make a pretense of making nice. The Net is revolutionizing everything, and as long as we've seen it coming, no one has yet figured out the new rules, much less how to rule.

Authors Griffin and Masters are good reporters and spin a compelling yarn. But their point of view is all about being in awe of the attackers. The attractors who interact with the attackers are never identified as such. They are simply regarded as v-i-c-t-i-m-s.

Interestingly, few if any of the attractors have anything mean to say about how they were abused by the attackers. Apparently, they keep playing nice even after the fight is over.
