Poe fans, historical fiction fans

I really enjoyed Pearl's Dante Club, but this follow-up didn't match the intensity and scope of the first book. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it was not a SERIES of murders and that the historical figures were more ideas/background than the main players. The narrator was rather bland, although Pearl's secondary characters (especially the French ones) were colorful and enjoyable. Overall, an amusing book, but I was glad it was discounted. On the upside, it did have me re-reading Poe's actual works, so there's that.
