"Where the willow meets the water, a tadpole met a caterpillar. They gazed into each other's tiny eyes ... and fell in love. She was his beautiful rainbow, and he was her shiny black pearl."

So starts this sweet but funny book that's perfect for 1st graders. Tadpole and caterpillar have found their true loves, and caterpillar says, "Promise me that you'll never change." But tadpole keeps changing (growing legs, etc.) and caterpillar gets very angry. Finally, caterpillar goes off in a huff with her broken heart, and cries herself to sleep (in her cocoon). When she emerges as a butterfly, she starts searching for her true love. And the frog eats her!

Elizabeth Fourth and fifth graders love this one, too! It really appeals to their sense of irony.

Mary Ann Thanks, Elizabeth - I'll try it out with them.

Pamela Can't wait to read this! I LOVE black humor.

Mary Ann The funny thing about it is that it isn't particularly black humor. It just happens. Oops. He just ate his true love. Burp. giggles ensue.
