it was amazing

LOVED. Crazy fun. Love the scenes written from the perspective of the scientist's dog and the perspective of the dead people in the church graveyard and the things they overhear and have overheard over the years.

Am upgrading this from 4 stars to 5. After a little time passing, have decided to not penalize this gem because it's a "comedy" -- like the Academy Awards view comedy as less worthy than drama, not acknowledging that comedy is often harder to pull off.

This guy is SERIOUSLY funny and the work INSPIRED. Brilliant, skewing everything from "It's a Wonderful Life" to "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "Gift of the Magi". The chapter simply describing snapshots of each of the main characters in a defining "Christmas moment" at age 6 is just ingenious. At what other possible moment in life would a person's true character shine through so succintly or hilariously than Christmas-age-6. And then there's the funny aspect of how much people try to create a perfect reality reflected in their Christmas photos and the result captured is often more pathetic and REAL than all the other non-Christmas time of the year. Life is messy and screwed up and amazing.

When you think of everything that is connected to Christmas -- its literature, movies, toys, giftwrap, charity work, parties, deocrations, traditions, etc. -- it all has that "awwww" aspect to it. This book cries bull**** on all of it, with the ultimate message that imperfection is well, perfect. What a wonderful Christmas gift to us.
