Okay, so Conan the Barbarian has become cliche, but when Howard was writing him back in the 30s it was a different story. You have to be very careful what edition you get, as most of the Howard stories are in omnibus format now. It is important to get one that is in order of publication, instead of chronological order. Howard himself said that the stories weren't meant to flow together, or to create a chronology, as they are written as if a drunken barbarian is retelling his adventures as he remembers them. So each short story should be taken on it's own. Others form a time-line by filling in stories and even changing the endings or beginnings of some of Howard's work. In any event the Conan envisioned by Howard is the definition of a "Dark Hero" and reading these stories make me wish for a simpler time where I would cleave an axe into those that annoyed me.
