** spoiler alert ** Orphaned Rachel and her adopted sister have been taken into her Uncle and Aunt's house. Rachel's aunt trains kids in dance and acting and Hilary is a natural at it, much to Rachel's dismay as she promised her dying mother that she would keep her sister doing classical ballet and not modern stuff. These efforts back-fire and bring a lot of grief. By the end of the book, both she and Hilary have found their niches and Rachel learns that you cannot plan someone's life for them.
