really liked it

A lovely book. It starts slowly, the first 66 pages are good, but you wonder if there is a story here. I thought it might be like Sarah Orne Jewett's Country of the Pointed Firs, which had no story but lovely prose.....but.... Keep reading because there is a great story here and it picks up 100% after page 66. His stories are so rich, real and interesting.
I learned how it was for families during WWII, the waiting, the not knowing whether their loved ones were even alive. The fear of a father who loves his son with all his heart and how the family copes with him in the war. How farmers feel about about their land, their duties to each other. There are several wonderful stories with charming characters. I want to read more of his books because his other books take a character from this book and expand on that character and the books are set in the same town. It's a lovely continuation of a story you are already familiar with.
