I was unprepared for this book. It took me by surprise, grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go. Not only is it a beautifully crafted, original story, it made me think. It got into my brain, squirmed around and got me contemplating perceptions of beauty, normality, acceptance, power, the opposites of all of them and the grey areas in between.

Katherine Dunn
“A carnival in daylight is an unfinished beast, anyway. Rain makes it a ghost. The wheezing music from the empty, motionless rides in a soggy, rained-out afternoon midway always hit my chest with a sweet ache. The colored dance of the lights in the seeping air flashed the puddles in the sawdust with an oily glamour.”
